No. I don't really feel anything in there. I'm just a digital imprint, you understand. But I know when it's been activated and deactivated. And I do like being on, because it means I'm doing the things a holocron was meant to do.

[Anakin snorted.] "If you're a Master, you mean?"

Well, in my time only masters are permitted to make Holocrons.

[ignite_the_stars]

"In my time only Masters were permitted access to them." [He said it with a shrug, he guess that was a sort of symmetry. And though it wasn't entirely accurate, on a rare occasion a Master might utilize one during a group lesson, but those instances were so very few and dependent on the Master teaching the lesson that it was basically the same as saying only Master's were permitted to use them.]

Is that so?

[Nomi frowns, looking at the glowing crystalline matrix that was projecting her form.]

That is not what was originally intended. There were dangerous holocrons, yes, recovered artifacts of the Sith. But Jedi like Master Vodo-Baas or Odan Urr? Surely they are not so similarly restricted.

[Anakin's blank look at the mention of those names should reveal all that he knew about those individuals. He had a feeling he was supposed to know more about them, but he couldn't place their names.]

"If the Council kept a store of Sith artifacts, they didn't tell the rest of the Jedi. And only Masters were granted admittance to the holocron Archives. Anyone of a lower rank wasn't allowed to possess or use the ones in the Archives. The few outside the Archives were... really just glorified storage devices, no Gatekeepers. I think a Master used a holocron for group lessons maybe... five times that I can remember."

[He shrugged.]

"I don't know. Maybe other Masters used them when training their Padawans. But they weren't used with me."

[His lack of knowledge was pitiable, honestly, given the level of importance they held within the Order's history. Nomi's frown only deepens.]

That is unfortunate. Extremely so.

[She takes a breath, or seems to anyway.]

A waste of knowledge. Pure and simple. But, no matter I suppose. I was not your teacher, or you'd have received that sort of instruction. Now, however, I am here.

You activated my holocron for a reason. What questions do you have?

[Oh... well, if a waste of knowledge disappointed her so much, his inquiry was not going to please her.]

"I wanted to know what you knew about making Gatekeepers. That was also not taught to me."

[seaoflight]

[She clicks her tongue and drops back to the floor.]

Was the secret lost? Or just not taught?

"Both? I wasn't taught, and I think they lost the knowledge to make them. But I don't think they would have taught me if they still knew how to do it."

Because of the prophecy surrounding you, I assume?

[ignite_the_stars]

[That shut Anakin up for a few moments. She'd clearly struck a nerve. He just stared at the hologram and contemplated deactivating it. But he felt that would somehow be wrong to the Gatekeeper.]

"I think they only reason they taught me anything was because of that prophecy."

I highly doubt that, Anakin. I truly do. All Force Sensitives are a blessing. Those with your talents? Well, let's just say you aren't alone in feeling that way.

[Anakin's brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of that.]

"No... they refused to train lots of Force Sensitives. All the time. If someone was too old the Temple would not accept them. They rejected me at first- they never told me why they changed their minds."

[And she frowns as well.]

That...is not the Order I know. I was not trained until I was well over twenty, and had a daughter of my own. [A sigh.]

That is not why you wished to speak to me, though. You want to know how to create a holocron gatekeeper?

"No, wait-" [YOu couldn't just drop information like that - a Grandmaster who didn't start training until she was over twenty years of age and already had so many attachments - and move on like it wasn't anything.]

"Go back to that. You were over twenty? There is a splinter group of heretical Jedi who accept adults initiates, but they were shunned from the Order and you couldn't even speak of them. You had a daughter? Did you have to leave her in someone else's care to become a Jedi?"

I was. I was twenty six when Master Thon began teaching me. And after that, Masters Odan Urr, Arca Jeth, and Vodo Siosk-Baas instructed me.

[She seems a little puzzled.]

And no, of course not. I did during the war, certainly, but Vima apprenticed under myself when I had the time to teach.

[Anakin's very cogent response was to stare, stunned, at the hologram of Nomi.

He knew Luke was older when he started training, and Luke didn't eschew attachments, but that made sense because Luke didn't have the Order and it's structures guiding him. Changes would happen.

But Nomi was from the Order, she had the same Code he had... and yet...

Okay, he could accept that maybe the Jedi had changed their age restrictions over the millennia, but surely, save for the utter ruination of the Order, like in Luke's situation, the restrictions against attachments had always been static and a part of the Code.]

"That must have been difficult, ending your attachments to your daughter."

[Nomi folds her arms and looks at Anakin blankly. What on earth?]

Give up my attachment? Vima is my daughter. Don't be absurd.

"But then... how do you keep yourself from falling to the Dark Side?"

[seaoflight]

I fail to see how loving my child has anything to do with that. I simply do not give in to the darker side. I do not let myself grow angry or act on that emotion.

[Anakin looked down at the holocron in his hand. That must be nice, just being able to decide she wouldn't feel a certain emotion. He tried and tried and tried to turn off what he felt, and he could just never do it, all he could do was figure out how to manage them once they arrived. Another bit of evidence that suggested there was just something wrong with him - what other way was he going to turn out but Palpatine's dong with an inability like this to even turn off his emotions.

But what she said still clashed with what he'd been taught.]

"Attachments lead to the Dark Side." [He said it like he was repeating a tired lesson.]

[She shook her head.]

Incorrect. Attachments do not. Obsession and fear of losing those attachments does.
