[Really, she just wants to be with him. She wants to know that everything is as it should be and he's not far away from her.

What she says is only slightly different.]

I want to be close to you.

Well, I don't know how much closer we can get...unless

[He gives her a soft smile. He's not usually one to infer such things. But if she wants closeness, he can't think of much else. But that's her choice.

But he does hug her more tightly. Trying to give her that closeness.]

[She's got to be aware of what he means; but she doesn't bring herself to say it. She seems content instead to let the evening take its natural course and for now, she simply slips into his hold.]

You're very good to me.

And you're very good to me.

[Luke's more than happy to let it lie at that. He's always happy to just spend time with her. Because for him, she's just what he needs. The right mix of sweet and strong.]

Too good, sometimes. If only because of the chocolate.

The chocolate? Is that it? [Come on, Luke, you can do better than that. And for once, she seems confident still, instead of thrown off by the joke.]

That, dear, is just the most recent thing.

[He just smiles, glad to hold her like this.]

But letting me hold you, be near you, and be a part of your life. That's just something I'm happy to have. More than any gift. You put so much thought into everything, and I'm grateful that you do that for me. I'm incredibly lucky.

It's the same for me. It might be selfish to want, here, but as long as you're here, that's what I want the most.

[All his kindness and sweetness are appreciated. His nobility is a wonderful quality. But all she really asks is, always: be there.]

I don't think it's selfish. We both want one another.

[Her kindness and understanding, her eagerness to just be there, and her strength at dealing with some of his more reckless impulses are all appreciated. He'd probably be flinging himself around more, and hurting himself, if not for you. Now he's only as reckless as strictly necessary.]

[It is selfish: to put him being with her ahead of him being happy. But Ami doesn't say this. Instead, she gives Luke a small, rueful smile.]

At this rate, I'm eating your chocolate before you, too. [Or at least, it's a temptation and she's urging him to eat more of them.]

[Then they can both be selfish.]

Oh. Well.

[Luke picks up two with the Force, letting them drift towards their mouths.]

[Ami's gotten used to this type of small magic - outside of Dark Kingdom hands - but she still reaches out to pick the chocolate up first rather than biting it in the air.]

[Luke does too, his tactile control isn't so good inside the barrier.]

These are really perfect, Ami.

Maybe they taste well because I made them while I was thinking about you.

[She's not exactly known for her baking prowess, after all - though chocolates aren't baked, and she's gotten better with practice.]

[He takes another bite]

That's got to be it.

I don't know if it's true, but Mako-chan used to say things like that. That feelings can make food taste differently, too. [She'd claimed it tasted better to cook food for several people than just one, for one thing.]

So did Aunt Beru, and I've heard Mara say things like that, though she'd probably shoot me on the spot for mentioning them.

[Mara...had a temper.]

It's sort of a romantic thought, isn't it?

From you? Yes. From my aunt and...Mara? No.

[He chokes back a laugh at the idea of Mara and romance.

[Well, it had been about friends when Makoto had said it, too; it's just the idea that a person makes such a difference that's sort of a romantic notion itself.]

Even if they believed something like that?

Maybe they do, but I'd have a hard time believing a woman like Mara would ever cook for a man out of love.

[Even if she had for him a couple of times. Ration bars.]

[That raises the question: are ration bars cooking?]

Then, come for dinner sometime soon. I'd like to cook that for you. We can find out if this theory is true, too.

[For Mara? Yes. She has to unwrap them.

And Luke just smiles. That's as close to an admission of love as he's gotten yet.]

I'd like to try it. But you have to let me bring something too.

You can bring something to drink with dinner. [She leaves it open what sort of drink it would be.]

Very well, I'll leave you to the cooking. But the next time, it'll be my turn.

Then the time after that is mine again. [Ami shoots Luke an arch look, but she really can't keep it up for long before it turns to a slightly embarrassed smile.]
