"I regret that I was unable to prevent the attack, but I did assist Loki afterward, with Adele's assistance."

[He frowns.]

"He was attacked again last night. By a newcomer to the village. Fortunately, Billy Kaplan intervened and I helped Loki in the aftermath, but I haven't the faintest idea how we can protect him when at any moment an enemy might enter the village and assault him.

He has apparently made many enemies in his home. Having spoken to Agent Coulson before his departure I am not surprised. However, he seems able to defend himself and escape, and I have been working with him myself.

[Luke's eyes twinkle]

I've been offering him advice on how to mimic some of our own skills with his sorcery.

"He did seem eager to learn about the Force. It's why I directed him to you- I felt you could teach a more broad array of skills and techniques than I."

Well, the Force isn't something I can teach, as you know. But the principles and ideas behind it I most certainly can. After all, much of what he can do can be replicated by magic. And for my part, he's helping me learn to create more realistic illusions.

"He seemed confident that his magic was compatible with the Force, in fact, so it seems he was correct in that regard.

I offered to teach him emotional coping techniques last night. He seemed amenable, so I regard this as a positive sign."

Compatible, yes. But not as versatile I feel.

That would be a positive sign. It means that there is perhaps hope for him to redeem himself.

"I had hope for it regardless. My first conversation with him following Rogers' warning convinced me that he was not so far gone."

Right. He's not even as far gone as Lord Vader was, in my time. I've sensed a capacity for good in him, underneath the rage and the pain.

Time will tell. Stark...believes it impossible, though he's quite unable to not take things personally.

"I do not know him well, but my impression of Tony Stark is that he is quite an authority on technology, science, and certain aspects of cultivating a public image, and... less of one in the comprehension of human emotions.

I flatter myself, perhaps, a better judge of character than him. If only by dint of my abilities."

Well, Tony Stark is an authority on the science and technology of his own world, though I suppose by our standards even his 'Iron Man' armor is a little...antiquated? It reminds me of a Mandalorian, to be honest, and I've never been terribly impressed with what passes for one these days.

And, besides, he's too close to the situation to see reason.

[For a moment, Obi-Wan thinks of Anakin, and feels a pang of regret.

Too close to the situation to see reason. It is a truth he had come to understand as largely responsible for his failure to observe Anakin's fall. He did not want to see it, and so he hadn't, even when the evidence was later revealed to be entirely obvious.

And then he thought of what Loki had said about ulterior motives. And he heard a voice that sounded an awful lot like his murmur something.

He forced himself not to pay attention.]

"I believe he is reasonable enough to accept that he was wrong if we succeed in helping Loki."

I concur. Stark is practical, if nothing else. We all need to work together to escape and manage anyway. It'd be foolish to turn away a magician as skilled as Loki when we can use the help.

[Luke shrugs, not noticing anything strange about Obi-Wan at the moment.]

Though I feel pretty bad, running off into the mountains and missing all the trouble.

[He raises an eyebrow at Luke.]

"Were I to miss such a crisis wholly by accident, and come back feeling remorse, you would tell me I was being foolish."

Obi-Wan, we were due for a Shift. I've been here nearly a year, I should know better than to take time like that when the Shift is waiting in the wings.

"And had you been present, there is every possibility that you, too, would have been stripped of your memories. Even had you not, I think there was precious little either of us could have done.

You deserved your time of rest, my friend."

I know, I just can't help but feel that I could have done more. I suppose that's a very...you...attitude.

[Luke smiles smugly]

You did teach me in my past. Perhaps it can't be helped.

[Honestly, Luke.

Honestly.

Luke.

Luke, honestly?]

[Luke laughs]

Oh come on, I'm only joking. You don't have to be so serious all the time.

"Being serious all the time has served me admirably for many decades, now. Particularly when dealing with the impulses of the Skywalker family."

If you think we're impulsive you should meet my sister and her husband.

[Luke laughed and waved a hand]

In all seriousness, I'm happy for you. Strange to think we're both involved with women, really. But, there's something more grave I'd like to talk about.

[His voice changes, and while he's still smiling its a dimmer, more serious one.]

Do you remember what Lupin said?

"Something about a broken vow being nothing compared to what you'd done?"

[He smiles slightly.]

"I had wondered about it, I confess, but I supposed it was not for me to know about."

Well, I figure I owe you an explanation for that. It's something a few people know, I just hadn't found a way to tell you. Lupin only found out because of that Shift, and frankly he got a lot of things mixed up.

[Luke leans back and looks at the ceiling, letting out a long sigh]

For a brief period about three years ago, I had a flicker of doubt in a moment of crisis. Palpatine hadn't been as dead as we'd hoped, having somehow transferred his consciousness into a clone body. He took me off guard, and I was forced to become his apprentice after he defeated me. I learned a great many of his secrets, both of the Dark Side and the Light Side, and ultimately with Leia's help I broke free of his influence.

[Luke shakes his head, running his cybernetic hand along the side of the chair]

Han killed him, finally. I took a year long hiatus to meditate, and with Kyle and Mara's help, as well as a little bit of guidance from Master Vodo-Baas's holocron I managed to undo what he'd done. It wasn't easy, and I probably should've said something sooner, given that Lupin and Ami both knew.

[He listens attentively to the story, saying nothing until he's finished. After a few moments, he finally speaks.]

"It was for you to tell me when you felt the time was right, my friend."

[And this certainly explained his anger toward Lupin- if Lupin knew, and were bringing it up in front of people who didn't, it would be a fairly grave offense, far more than simply violating his medical restrictions.]

"I appreciate your candor. I cannot imagine what that must have been like."

Truthfully, I have done my best to forget the experience, and I've moved past it. For all his hate though, Palpatine did me a service. Without him, I'd never have learned to be a healer.

[Luke snorts a little at the irony there]

No Force Healer survived the purge save for him, and I think that he meant for me to succeed him as a Sith Lord when he passed away. I've learned quite a few of his abilities, though I've neither the means nor the desire to use any save Healing. Most are far, far too destructive or just...unnatural.

Still, I wish that Lupin had more sense than he did. I'd meant to tell you this soon regardless, but it was not his place. That man...is a frustrating idiot sometimes.

"He lacks maturity, but I believe he genuinely means well. Actually, I intended to spend the weekend with him, on the beach. He believes we could both use the time away from the village, and I believe we could both use some time to seek peace."
