19th Transmission: A Poor Imitation [Voice/Action] (May 20-23rd)

[Taking up the maintenance work had been just the thing Luke had needed. Reeling from the loss of Obi-Wan, he'd just wanted to be away from everyone and everything, friends and girlfriend included. A note for Ami was all he'd really left, promising to be back when he felt up to facing the future after the ridiculousness that was...well...that last shift. And he had to admit that even though it was only low orbit it had been nice to see space again. Being so long cooped up on a single planet was strange to someone who was just used to flying, and it'd done wonders to relieve pressure.

And given him an itch.

For the first day after he returns or so, Luke can be found at the farm, taking care of maintenance after the planting had been finished, while in the afternoon he's busy programming something rather complex on the Battle Dome computer. And of course, he'll be resuming his evening shifts at the Clinic and spending some quiet time at House 46.

However by the 22nd he's finished his project and on 23rd he sends out a generalized broadcast.]

Hello Luceti.

This is Luke Skywalker. It occurs to me that I've not done one of these in some time, so allow me to extend a greeting to the New Feathers from this cycle. I manage the farmland and could always use some volunteers to help maintain it. It's meant to supplement the food supplies granted to us by the Malnosso in the event of an emergency, so it's a rather hefty project that could always use more hands.

Also, I've been working on a little side project at the Battle Dome. If anyone is interested, I've managed to program some training and historical dogfight simulations from my homeworld. Flight simulations, for both X-Wings and Y-Wings, the two kinds of snubfighters I've had the most experience with. I'd appreciate any help testing them for bugs, and if anyone would like to add to them they're more than welcome to do so. If you've ever wanted to fly, it might be a good chance, and it's a skill might be useful if another draft occurs in space.

On an unrelated note, I've apparently missed my own birthday. I'm 31 now, and this is my second in Luceti. It's a little strange, having been on a single planet for so long. For those of you who do remain stationary, how do you manage it? I admit it's got me rather restless.

[He hugs her, and opts to take the cake over to the table.]

It smells amazing. Thank you. Really.

[Turning, he walks right on over and gives her an even bigger hug, and a kiss too.]

I've missed you. Sorry I just...took off like that. With Ben and everything I just needed some time to clear my head. [With a wry grin he adds] Nothing dangerous. I was working on maintenance on some of the Malnosso starfighters.

[Ami shakes her head.]

I went, too. A research mission. I thought it would give me something to focus my mind on.

[They're alike in that. For Ami, it's always easiest to cope with the things worrying her if she has something else to put her energy into, too.]

I hope it did. I know what it's like to be distracted.

[Gently, he squeezes her arm and walks over to have a seat on the couch.]

A lot's happened lately, though.

[Ho...boy, time to broach that shift. He can't really stand talking around something that big for long.]

[Ami is very good at the art of Avoidance. In fact, she manages not to answer what Luke's really trying to talk about at all. She puts the cake down instead, and then heads towards the kitchen to find plates and forks and a knife.]

It seems like Luceti is usually a busy place.

[Frowning, he nods. Ami, you are good at avoidance, but unfortunately he's...not really going to play along this time]

Ami. I think we should talk. About the last shift.

[She freezes for a second, to buy herself the time to carefully consider what to say.]

I already understand... the things you said back then were because of what the Malnosso did.

[She's giving him a total out. She's willing to expect nothing. She seems to assume that's what he'd be worrying about. She doesn't think it's probably necessary to add that she's not pregnant.]

[He stands and walks over, shaking his head. This was something he did want. A family. A wife. Marriage. Swallowing thickly, he closes his eyes and just lets it out.]

Ami. I...meant it. Maybe not right now. Or anytime soon. But I...would love to marry you. That wasn't the Malnosso's doing. That was just them...speeding up what I do want.

Though, I'd rather have a second shot at proposing. When I'm myself and not some ridiculous parody of it.

[In all the enormity of what Luke's just said, the sheer overwhelming impossibility of it strikes her even harder than how much she wants it - and she does want it. She knows her age can't really be called old, but she wants family some day, and Luceti is robbing her of that. Because-]

Here?

[This isn't the place. It's the first blank word to come out of her mouth, and she hates herself for it a second afterward.]

[It's not ideal, no. But he'll take it however he can get it. And it's odd, feeling the conflict in her. He can't help it, Ami.]

Wherever you'll have me. However you'll have me. This may not be the perfect place, you're right. I can feel the conflict in you.

But I do love you. And I want you to be my wife, here or on any other world.

[Call it extra incentive to find a way out together.]

[It's not that Luke isn't (very) attractive. It's not even like she hasn't, just once or twice, let herself go enough to imagine what it would be like if they could do that. Alright, maybe more than once or twice. Alright, maybe a lot more than once or twice.

But in Luceti, she's never been able to truly see a future. She's always assumed her future is back home, even after these several years of being here. She hasn't wanted to put down roots because they might make her fight less hard to get back to her mother and her friends.]

If we can go somewhere together...

[Luke smiles brightly at that half-acceptance.]

Ami, however you'll have me. No pressure. I love you, and I want you with me. If you want to wait till we find a way home. Together. I think I can wait. If this doesn't change things between us.

[She doesn't know what to say. All that's going through her mind is a product of surprise, like, but he hasn't even met Mama yet!

And at the same time, tantalizing thoughts like, we could really be together if we could go away from here.

In the end, all she can really do is nod.]

[That settles it, then. Luke reaches out and squeezes her hand gently, hopefully reassuringly.]

Thank you.

[If her smile looks a bit nervous, it's at the new situation, not Luke himself. Ami even manages to squeeze back, after just a second.]

[Nervous he can deal with. But there was one other, and he asks with a big smile, already knowing the answer.]

Now that that's out of the way. And...cleared up. Tell me you aren't really pregnant...

[LUKE!!

Ami immediately flares up with color, and looks half panicked as she manages to quickly shake her head no before she finds her voice.]

Nothing like that! [Is it possible to seriously be embarrassed to death? Because she's working on it now.]

I'm joking, dear.

[He laughs and shakes his head]

With everything being so serious...we need to loosen up, too.

[Luke, that was a very mean joke, so embarrassing! At least Ami has the chance to feel relieved as soon as he says that, though.]

But, I'm really not. [She says it more seriously this time, because it is serious, the thought of bringing a child into the world - this world - any world.]

Ami, I know.

[He reaches up to squeeze her shoulder reassuringly]

I'm sorry, it was a joke in bad taste. So now that I've screwed that up, how about we try some of your cake?

No, it's alright. [She quickly moves to 'reassure Luke' mode.]

Let's have the cake and celebrate, though. Even if it's here, you should celebrate your birthday.

Yes. Let's do that.

[He nods in agreement and heads into the kitchen to get some plates.]

[Ami gets up and follows Luke, who shouldn't have to do the work for his own mini-celebration. She'll work on drinks since he seems to be covering the plates anyway.]

Would you like to something with all your friends, too?

I think this is better. Honestly, I'm not really sure I want to have a party or anything.

Just...personal time, with the people that matter.

As long as it's what you want. [She feels better about it, too, to tell the truth; she's never entirely comfortable in a large crowd where she feels like she only knows a very few people.]

That's exactly what I want.

[He nods again, giving her a quick hug before the settle down for a quiet evening with cake!]
