Term most people are unfamiliar with. [And he's regretful about that.] Concept most people don't understand. In my world, we usually don't describe it among my people - it's not something we really need to. It's just known.

And I guess I should actually explain it.

It refers to a type of relationship that develops between a group of people. An extremely strong type of bond - one that goes beyond friendship, family, or blood.

[There's more to it, much more to it... and he pauses for a sip of water.]

See... nakama is so hard to understand because of the strength of those bonds. They survive betrayal, and heartbreak, and pretty much everything else that would rip a relationship to shreds. There's still acceptance and yes, even love at the end of the day. You are theirs and they are yours.

[Another sip. And Law studies the water.]

Or maybe what's so inexplicable is that nakama mainly forms between pirates. We aren't the sorts you'd think would have this kind of thing, would you?
